Part 10

Another rummage in the brass assortment tin yealed a couple of scraps to help make a mast top, a side stay mounting band which also incorporated a mounting point for the top of the head sail. Additionally I made the gooseneck, this mounts the boom to the mast and must have the ability to allow movement in all directions.

A formed outer ring with 3 x afore mentioned mounting points was made out of 2mm brass rod. This was solded to the inner ring which was sized to slip onto the mast down to the desired height.

The mast cap was turned out of solid brass and that too had a formed mounting point made in 2mm brass rod. Soldered and linished to match.

The gooseneck could have been purchased like the one below but I wasn't liking the screw that tighted the clamp and at £20 it wouldnt have been in the spirit of the build to purchase it anyway. I ordered a pack of  x5 brass flexible joints that are used on model car and boat prop shafts. These worked out at £1.50 inc post each from my favourite shopping channel...Ali-express. (Bargain..4 x spare for future projects.)

The idea of mounting the flexible joint on a 3mm pip didnt work out so the final version the flexible joint is soldered direct to the mast mounting ring.

I'm awaiting some stainless micro screws that will fix the boom to this joint....mild steel screws that will in no time go rusty has no place on this yacht!

Stay tuned.
